Let’s start with what PVC is. PVC, or polyvinyl chloride, is a widely – used plastic. It’s in everything from pipes and cables to window frames and flooring. But PVC on its own doesn’t have all the properties we need. That’s where additives come in.
Plasticizers
One of the most common types of PVC additives is plasticizers. These make the PVC more flexible. The most well – known plasticizers are phthalates. They’ve been used for ages, but they’re not without their problems.
Phthalates can leach out of PVC products over time. When they end up in the environment, they can have some serious impacts. For example, they’re considered endocrine disruptors. This means they can interfere with the hormonal systems of animals and humans. In wildlife, it can lead to reproductive issues. Some fish species exposed to phthalates have shown abnormal reproductive development.
In the environment, phthalates can also persist for a long time. They can accumulate in soil and water, and then work their way up the food chain. Small organisms absorb them from the environment, and then larger animals eat those organisms, and so on. This bioaccumulation can lead to high levels of phthalates in top predators.
But here’s the good news. As a supplier, we’re well – aware of these issues. We’ve been working on developing and supplying alternative plasticizers. For instance, there are bio – based plasticizers made from renewable resources like vegetable oils. These are much more environmentally friendly. They break down more easily in the environment, and they don’t have the same endocrine – disrupting effects as phthalates.
Stabilizers
Another important type of PVC additive is stabilizers. These are used to prevent the PVC from degrading when it’s exposed to heat or light. Traditional stabilizers often contain heavy metals like lead and cadmium.
Lead and cadmium are extremely toxic. When PVC products with these stabilizers are discarded, the heavy metals can leach into the soil and groundwater. This can contaminate drinking water sources and harm plants and animals. In humans, exposure to lead can cause learning disabilities in children and other health problems like kidney damage and high blood pressure.
We’ve been pushing the use of alternative stabilizers. Calcium – zinc stabilizers are a great option. They’re non – toxic and have similar performance to the heavy – metal – based stabilizers. They’re also more sustainable in the long run because they don’t pose the same environmental and health risks.
Lubricants
Lubricants are also added to PVC to make it easier to process. Some older lubricant formulations might contain substances that are not so great for the environment. For example, some petroleum – based lubricants can have a high carbon footprint.
When these lubricants are produced, a lot of energy is used, and greenhouse gases are emitted. Also, if they end up in the environment, they can be difficult to break down.
But we’ve got some new and improved lubricants. There are now bio – based lubricants that are derived from natural sources. They have a much lower carbon footprint and are more biodegradable. This means that they won’t stick around in the environment for a long time and cause problems.
Flame Retardants
Flame retardants are added to PVC to make it less flammable. Some of the traditional flame retardants, like certain brominated flame retardants, are a cause for concern.
These brominated flame retardants can be persistent in the environment and can bioaccumulate. They’ve been found in the Arctic, far from where they were used, which shows how easily they can spread. They can also have negative effects on human health, including potential impacts on the nervous system.
We’re offering more environmentally friendly flame retardants. For example, some inorganic flame retardants are a better choice. They’re less likely to spread in the environment and are generally considered safer for human and environmental health.
